Although the idea that man was able to communicate with spirits had existed already for centuries, modern belief in such a practice came about in March 1848 in Hydesville, New York. The movement, which would come to be known as Spiritualism, would remain strong for nearly a century, enjoying its greatest revival after World War I. The practice was founded on the belief that life existed after death and that the spirit existed beyond the body. Most importantly, it was believed that these spirits could (and did) communicate with the living.

Spirituality on the other hand allows you to make your own decisions, your own viewpoint on every issue. Spirituality is your own personal experiences, feelings, and interpretations of events and what they mean to you. Organized religions, therefore, even including covens, Catholics, Buddhists, Baptists, and Quakers, however different, share a "religious" idiom of belief and dedication to those shared beliefs.

The basic ideas behind spiritualism are far from new. People have been channeling and communicating with spirits and generally getting messages from "the other side" for thousands of years. However the specific name spiritualism is usually reserved for a particular brand of mediumistic transcommunication that became popular during the Victorian era. Those who speak of spirituality as opposed to religion generally believe that there are many "spiritual paths" and that there is no objective truth about which is the best path to follow. Rather, adherents of this definition of the term emphasize the importance of finding one's own path to God, rather than following what others say works. The best way to describe this view is: the path which makes the most sense is the correct one (for oneself). Many adherents of orthodox religions who consider spirituality to be an aspect of their religious experience are more likely to contrast spirituality with secular "worldliness" than with the ritual expression of their religion.

History: Credit for spiritualism as a movement is usually given to Emanuel Swedenborg who lived from 1688 to 1772. Swedenborg claimed to be able to contact the spirits and to be a powerful medium. He wrote numerous books, which he said were actually written through him by those on the other side. Swedenborg's version of spiritualism was more explicitly based on Christianity than the modern version. Modern spiritualism began in the mid nineteenth century.
